  • Ledisi’s first name means ‘to bring forth’ in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa by the ethnic Yoruba people.
  • Her father had abandoned the family when she was a toddler and she did not have any contact with him for nearly 3 decades.
  • Hailing from a family of singers, she had an early start in music and had started performing publicly with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was just 8 years old.
  • She was initially very shy about her singing talent and would perform only upon being forced by other students in her gym class. They would often urge her to sing a particular track – Deniece Williams’ version of the song Black Butterfly (1984).
